1. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Limosilactobacillus reuteri RC-14 – Support for vaginal flora

Study: Reid et al., FEMS Immunology & Medical Microbiology (2003)
Study type: Randomized clinical trial (RCT)
Population: Women with disrupted vaginal flora
Findings: In this study, daily intake of GR-1 and RC-14 for 28 days was associated with an increase in lactobacillus dominance in the vaginal flora.*

2. Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 – Support for microbial balance postpartum

Study: Arroyo et al., Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research (2010)
Study type: Double-blind, placebo-controlled RCT
Population: Postpartum women
Findings: In this study, it was observed that women who took L. fermentum CECT5716 experienced, on average, fewer episodes of a certain breast inflammation during the breastfeeding period.*

3. Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM – Mechanisms for maintaining low pH

Study type: Review article (laboratory studies + theoretical context)
Findings: This review describes that Lactobacillus species in the female urogenital tract can form a barrier against infections by:

  • competing for adhesion to epithelial cells,

  • producing lactic acid (lowering pH),

  • releasing hydrogen peroxide and bacteriocin-like substances.

4. Prebiotic XOS – Stimulation of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria

Study: Lin et al., Gastroenterology Research and Practice (2016)
Study type: Randomized, placebo-controlled study
Population: Healthy adults
Findings: In this study, XOS intake for 6 weeks was associated with higher numbers of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in the gut compared to placebo.*

5. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and L. reuteri RC-14 – Research on recurrence risk

Study: Beerepoot et al., Clinical Infectious Diseases (2012)
Study type: Double-blind RCT
Population: Women with recurrent urinary tract infections
Findings: This study reported that women in the probiotic group had, on average, fewer recurrences than the placebo group during the study period.*
